WILLIAMSTOWN GARDEN CLUB
General Membership Meeting July 7, 2014
The meeting was held on Monday, July 7 at the home of Rita Watson and followed the Club’s “Hidden Garden Tour” which included five sites: Hugh Glover’s at 1477B Green River Road, Sue Metzner’s at 335 Gale Road, Ginny Sheldon’s at 121 Ide Road, Ghetta Hirsch’s at 30 Church Street and Rita Watson’s at 41 Bulkley Street. The business portion was called to order by President, Sue Metzner, at 2:30 pm. Minutes of the June 2 meeting were approved as corrected: Susan Hyde, not Sue Pike, will be informing members without email of coming events. Five guests were welcomed. Rita was acknowledged for her good spirit in rallying to move the meeting indoors as a severe thunderstorm passed through.
Announcements:
July 4 Parade: Suki Wilkins thanked those who participated in the rain soaked July 4th parade – Sue Metzner and friend, Eja Heekin, Diane Glick, Joan Wright, Elaine Neely, Carol Oshinsky, Ginny Granger, Carol Crosscup and herself.
Corresponding Secretary: Anne Tiffany, announced that she had written thank you notes to The Mason’s for the use of its property at the top of Water Spring for the Club’s annual spring Plant and Bake Sale and to new member, Joyce Harsch, for the red, white and blue wild flower seeds which were imprinted with the WGC name and distributed at the July 4th parade. Flowers were sent to Joan Gniadek following her hospitalization, and a note from GiGi Douglas on behalf of the Laitman family was read. Sandy Laitman (Alice Shaver Foundation) was a strong supporter of the Garden Club’s town-wide beautification efforts. Rita Watson, representing the Garden Club, provided three lovely purple and gold (for Williams!) flower arrangements for his memorial service on June 29th at the Faculty Club. At Rita’s suggestion, Anne will write thank you notes to Hugh Glover and Ginny Sheldon, non-Garden Club members, who opened their properties for the Garden Tour. Anne shared a recent publication, “Treasured Gardens of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts” which mentioned the beautification efforts and gardens planted and maintained by Club members.
Beautification: Dianne Glick thanked everyone for their respective efforts maintaining the bridges and planters and was pleased that everything is now “good to grow.” Elaine Neely spoke on behalf of Field Park and the Milne Library Garden. Additional fall blooming plants have been installed at Field Park and 100 shady plants are now ready to be installed in the Sally Tenney Osborn Garden at the Library. Planting day is tomorrow (July 8) at 11 am. Countryside will arrive at 12:30 to plant 18 azaleas.
The Fall Plant Sale: Set for Friday, September 5, 10 – 2, on the steps of the Paresky Student Center, this annual fund-raiser is in desperate need of a Chairperson. Also a new Historian will be necessary as Bunny Smith will be moving. Please contact Sue Metzner if you can help.
Hospitality: Co-Chairs, Anne Tantalo and Katie Lanoue, thanked those who had provided refreshments.
Next Meeting: Monday, August 4 at 12 noon is the Potluck Picnic lunch at Carol Paul’s home, 387 Stratton Road. The speaker is Jean Anderson who will discuss Container Gardening. Bette Craig is the coordinator.
The business program ended at 2:50, followed by seasonal refreshments.
