Minutes – Williamstown Garden Club meeting, June 17, 2017
The meeting was called to order by Joan Wright. Visitors were introduced.
Civic beautification – The Field Park gardens have been spectacular this spring Thanks to both crews who have worked on them. Diann Glick mentioned that all the venues in the town have been planted, and that she and others will plant the cisterns at Sweetwood on Tuesday, June 20, at 3:30 weather permitting. Call Diann if you have a question about the weather.
Sue Metzner, after the meeting, mentioned the following: a new container at the east end of Adams Road will be tended by Katie Lanoue and Carol Paul; the containers from the Williamstown Historical Museum have been moved to their new location at Little Red Schoolhouse and they will tend them; only the larger boxes will be planted on Hopper Road because of pending work on the wall: and the barrels have been replaced at Margaret Lindley Park after theft over the winter.
Sue has been asked by Williams College if the Garden Club will plant and tend their new planters planned for the new bookstore. Please let Sue know your thoughts on this proposal.
Plant Sale – Robin reported that the plant and food sale grossed $2,158.08 – a new high. Thank you to Pat and Maria Siskind, Carol Oshinsky, Elaine Neely, and all those who participated. A group effort which was very successful.
Trip to the Mount – Linda Conway reported that the Tuesday, July 11th trip to The Mount will leave, by carpool, from the Williams Inn parking lot at 10:00. The $16. entrance fee will entitle WGC members to visit the house after the tour of the gardens. Food will be available in the café.

Pollinator initiative – Anne O’Connor, Williamstown Selectperson, presented information about the initiative she and Brigit Spann of Caretaker Farm have undertaken to obtain a grant to further education about the protection of pollinators in the township following a resolution adopted at the recent Town Meeting. The motion was agreed to, to write a letter from the club supporting their efforts, which was submitted to Anne on June 19th… .
Speaker – Ellen Ecker Ogden spoke to us about “Herbs, Greens, and Aromatics”. She mentioned a number of heirloom varieties whose introduction to the United States she pioneered, as well as showing images of different garden designs and plant combinations. At the end of her talk, which was very well received, she answered questions and made her book “The Complete Kitchen Garden” available.
