Williamstown Garden Club – June 14, 2016

A GENERAL MEMBERSHIP meeting was held on Tuesday, June 14 at 10 am in the Heritage Room at the Williams Inn. The business portion was called to order by Co-President Dianne Glick at 10:10. The meeting and program were open to the public, and there were about six guests. One guest, MJ Downing, completed a form and paid the dues for membership in the club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 28 (primarily of perennials plus a bake sale and some gardening items) set a financial record. Dianne thanked Patricia and Maria Siskind, Carol Oshinsky and Elaine Neely for their leadership. It was suggested that the outdoor signs also say “bake sale” as many were surprised by the wonderful offerings. The Propagation Party for the Fall Plant Sale held at Licia Conforti’s went well and now several members are caretaking plants for September 9 sale on Paresky Steps chaired by Eja Heekin. Patricia Siskind has volunteered to organize Hospitality for the remainder of the season. Three to four members are needed for each meeting and sign-up sheets were available. In Linda Conway’s absence, Dianne Glick reminded everyone of the next membership meeting on Tuesday, July 12 Naumkeag in Stockbridge. Sign-up sheets were available and car pools will be arranged. Departure is at 11 am and the groups will return by 4 pm. The cost is $16, and members were reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages and dessert will be provided. Corresponding Secretary AnneTiffany reported that she had written thank you notes to the Harper Center for hosting the May meeting and to the Masons for use of their front property for the recent Plant Sale. Beautification Chair Sue Metzner reported that all the barrels, planters and bridges have been planted and are waiting for warmer weather to produce some growth and flowers. Kathy McKnight had a new supply of green Garden Club tee shirts available (sizes S to 2X) and several were purchased. The business portion of the meeting was adjourned at 10:17.

PROGRAM: Anne Tiffany introduced Karen Bussolini (www.karenbussolini.com) from Kent, CT who presented an informative, informal and fun program (illustrated with many of her excellent photographs) on “Surviving in the Darwinian Garden: Planting for the Fittest.” The program ended at noon and was followed by delicious refreshments (cream cheese and bagels, smoked salmon, deviled eggs, and petite sandwiches – plus some sweets!). Kathy McKnight, Recording Secretary

Addendum: The Garden Club will be participating in the July 4 th parade. Information will follow, and members are encouraged to wear their WGC tee shirts! Contact Kathy McKnight if you need one.
