Williamstown Garden Club – September 13, 2016
A GENERAL MEMBERSHIP meeting was held on Tuesday, September 13 at 10 am in the Lunder Center at the Clark Art Institute. The business portion was called to order by former President Sue Metzner. The meeting and program were open to the public, and there were about six guests.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Eja Heekin reported on the Fall House Plant Sale which was held on September 9 on the Paresky Student Center steps. It was very successful, grossing $1,830 and, less expenses, netting $1,776. Eja said that the students preferred the smaller plants, buying several rather than one large plant. She recommended that we do more with propagation earlier in the spring, and asked for ideas about greenhouse availability. Judy Summers offered to inquire about the greenhouse at Green River Farms. Karen Pellegrini was thanked for providing a car load of succulents from Florida which were hugely popular. All plants sold out. The day was hot, but the enthusiasm among the garden club volunteers and the students was terrific. Anne Tiffany, Corresponding Secretary, reported that letters of sympathy had been sent to Nancy Gaudette and Barbara Richardson. She read a note from The Historical Museum thanking the Club for planting and maintaining the two pots by their entrance sign. A letter of resignation from Daphne McGill was also read. She and her husband are moving to Essex Meadows, a retirement community in Essex, CT. Kathy McKnight announced that she has green Garden Club tee shirts in all sizes available for purchase at $15.00. Sue Metzner reported for the Beautification Committee that the Town will stop watering at the end of the month. The boxes on the bridges will be dismantled shortly thereafter. Club members maintaining the barrels in South Williamstown and the containers throughout town can determine when they will be pulled, depending on weather and rain conditions. Patricia Siskind thanked those who provided refreshments to be enjoyed following the meeting. The business portion of the program was adjourned at 10:17.
PROGRAM: Claudia Ellet introduced two presenters from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston who offered an outstanding program on “Arts in Bloom.” The first portion described the program and this was followed by a flower arrangement created to “coordinate” with a Japanese wood-cut, a large photo of which was also on display. A drawing was held for the arrangement and won by Jytte Brooks. Sarah Foehl and Maria Siskind won bouquets of additional flowers. The program ended at 11:45 and was followed by delicious refreshments.
